Be a Man
Garrett Hagen
It might not seem like it but the media has made a huge impact on our lives. Socialization is a part of the problem. Socialization is the way society shapes us, makes us look, and think. The media has portrayed many stereotypes in the past, but one of the biggest is how men are looked at and shaped. The bro code is universal code that men have to follow to be a good bro to each other. The man-box is box of rules for males to be masculine. I personally have been shaped to be a man and to follow the bro code/man-box, to dress like a man, and to get a manly job.
The way boys and teenagers are raised to follow these code have made them disrespectful towards women. Ever since the media has come into the picture they have been stereotyping and telling us how today's society works. It has shaped how men and women look at each other. The “man box” is a huge part of the problem. A man named Tony Porter, who was featured in a TED talk, says, “There absolutely are some wonderful wonderful things about being a man while at the same time there are some thing that are just straight up twisted.” What he says really spoke to me and it told me how being a man is great but we have enforced some very wrong things in with the manhood. In this video explains how women are instruments for men, to be specific sexual instruments, and to be manly or masculine in situations. It says to not cry or show emotion around women because it shows weakness. The “bro code” says how women are only for sex and girlfriends and not to be friends with girls. Although these parts of it are bad, there are some good parts of it, saying to be respectful when talking to a girl and always have your friends back. These ideas have changed they way I see women. Just a couple words changed my outlook on life even though the rule aren't enforced. The way these affect men and even teens is what we need to change.
The way men dress has a huge impact on what people think and look at us. We have been socialized and told by the media how to dress. The way we look portrays to other people how they see us or think we act. A good example is “Princess Boy”. This video is about an 8 year old boy who likes to wear dresses. The mom says, “The first time he did this was in daycare and he ran up to me in a big red dress and pink heels with a huge smile. I paused for a minute took look around to see what the other parents thought.” What this says to me is that she felt that she needed to see what other parents thought about her child. She knew it was wrong and wanted to see what others thought. People see this as wrong because girls usually wear dresses and guys wear t-shirts and flat bill hats but we have been socialized to see this as being right and wrong. In today's society boys who don’t dress like males get punished and made fun of by other men or even by girls. This has effected me to dress manly and if I don’t I will be judged by my peers. I am taught to like the clothes I like and to dress the way I dress. How we judge someone based on appearance has messed up the way we all dress so we can impress others.
What jobs we like and want to be has changed a lot about a person. I personally watched a video on this called “Female vs Male jobs”. The journalist in this video says “The way society teaches us to get the jobs we get has affected how we get paid and the people we hang out with.” I thought of how women are going into these womanly profession because we have told them this is right for a women to do and the same goes for men. Stereotypical jobs for men are considered to be Construction, President, and Military. Men have been taught that these are manly and masculine things to get a job in. Stereotypical jobs for women construct of Assistant, Nurse, and Elementary teachers. Women have been told that these are good even though they do not pay as much as male jobs. I have also researched and learned that women make 75 cents for every dollar that a man makes. This is not fair that this is what we have come to . The jobs I want to get are way different then the jobs one of the girls in my class wants to get. Sh e want to be a nurse and I want to be a pilot. I have been told that it is wrong to be an assistant or a flight attendant. I have been socialized to be a firefighter or a pilot. These have just starting to change in today's society but if we eliminate these we will have more of an equal society.
The video we watch and the music we listen to all fits together and get engraved deep into our minds. Everything we do is stored back in the conscience of our minds. These is how our personality is shape and the way we see things. It is hard to change after these rules and guideline have been embedded into our heads. The way we see people, ideas, and the way we think has been all screwed up by the thing we are exposed to and we need to really see what's right and what's wrong. I have changed the way I look at girls. I have changed the jobs I want to get. These are different and not wrong. I have changed This even though it takes time and others might not feel the same way.
The mask I made symbolizes how the media changes us. The necklace means how the product we like and the one we are told to buy make us look different. The left is how media, the man box, and society affects us. The right is the actual person on the inside without the media's influence. The cracks and blood is how they dig into us and engulf us. I will put brand names on the side to represent how they are forced into us.

Mask
Reflection
1. What are you most proud about your mask? Why?
I am most proud of what my mask symbolizes. I thought about how my subject about ‘Being a Man’ was thought of by other people. I had to see it from both points of view and express my own. I had to show how I had incorporated what I was saying in the essay and put it on a mask.
2. Quote the section of your essay that you are most proud of and describe, in detail, why you are proud of it?
“The video we watch and the music we listen to all fits together and get engraved deep into our minds. Everything we do is stored back in the conscience of our minds. These is how our personality is shape and the way we see things. It is hard to change after these rules and guideline have been embedded into our heads. The way we see people, ideas, and the way we think has been all screwed up by the thing we are exposed to and we need to really see what's right and what's wrong.” What I meant by this is society has too much influence on us and how we view each other is totally messed up by who is better looking and stronger. I am proud of this because I have seen this first hand and enjoyed people reading this and seeing what I had to say.
3. What will you remember from this project? Why?
I will take away how I don’t need to be fake for other peoples acceptance. I have also realized that if people don’t like me for me that’s their problem. I will probably always remember this essay even when I am older because of how big of an impact it made on me realizing what is wrong with todays socialization.
4. What Habit of Heart and Mind do you need to work on in your next project to get better at project based learning? Why do you need to improve and how that habit of heart and mind will help you?
I could have improved on Evidence. I feel like I didn’t put very many resources in the paper and it I did I didn’t quote them. This habit could help me get a better grade next time I do a project and I write an essay I could use some quotes or studies to back up my points. This could really help with project based learning because it could get me a better grade or have my talking points a little more backed up.
