Course Overview
10th Grade Biology is all about the study of organic life on earth. Biology is an explanation of how natural life consists on planet earth. Biology holds so many interesting facts about life and how populations continue to thrive on this harsh world we live on. Colleen Dunning, our Biology teacher is indicting this amazing knowledge enriched with interesting facts about where life came from, how we view it, what describes life, and how life exists on the planet. I am very excited about being a part of this amazing learning experience and am anxious to see what will come from Colleen's teaching of this obscure and complex course.
Crime Scene Investigation Project
This project we were split into groups of 2 and each group were assigned a crime scene (out of 3 crime scenes). We then were assigned reports to do for each step of current day crime investigations (ballistics, bullet trajectory, superglue fuming). When all my reports were done my hard drive crash and lost everything so I did a video explaining blood typing instead.

Here is the video I made for this project: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W39kcgy1k9U&list=UUhBaE-pdilLjfyL1Z7QpDGQ |
This project is about the justice system in our country and the current system of Crime Scene
Investigation. First we watched the film Memphis Three and studied the exoneration system. We
then were assigned a crime scene out of three and had to solve the scene through modern
science. This taught us all the current science used in Criminal Investigation and put us in the shoes
of the adults.
We learned many different subjects such as; blood typing, bullet trajectory, splatter patterns, ballistics,
point blank ballistic wounds, and odontology. We had to research these and write multiple paragraph
reports on these subjects. Unfortunately my computer crash between the period i got done with them
and when we were suppose to turn them in. I lost everything on my computer and all the documents.
I re-did the project by doing a video of me explaining the blood typing on our crime scene.
The forensic science that interested me the most was the ballistics. I was intrigued by how the bullet
travels through the air and ricochets off things. I did the best on making up all the work I lost and doing
the work I could do without a computer while mine was getting fixed. I wish my computer didn’t crash
but there’s nothing I can do about that next time. Next time I would study each subject more before
writing the reports. I feel like I could have learned more on each individual subject.

Dissection Project
I chose a shark because it was different from the others. Also the opportunity to dissect a shark won’t come along again. I learned the basic anatomy of the dog sharks and other sharks alike. This can be useful in any type of marine biology or other subjects in the future. What I learned about myself is that I hold information for a long time after I have learned it. This is mainly because of how long this project lasted and how it drilled into my head. This can be proven from my grade which was an A-. I hope to do another project like this in the future to gain more skills.
Honey Bee Project
"What Is a Bee Smoker?" WiseGEEK. N.p., n.d. Web. 23 Apr. 2015. <http://www.wisegeek.org/what-is-a-bee-smoker.htm>.
All the information in this paper is based on fact and no opinion. It is from a source called Wise Geek so I don’t know how trustful it is. Although, it does has the history and current methods of beekeeping. It talks about the way the methods have changed over the years. I can use a lot of the info in this article in the final product when I make a bee smoker. “Removable frame” were invented by L.L. Langstroth for the bee smoker. This changed the way beekeeping had been practice for centuries. Before this invention they used to destroy the hives and bees to retrieve the honey.
The science on the smoke is simple. The guard bees usually burst these bubble of volatile substance that is like an alarm to the soldier bees. This let’s them know there is an attack on the hive. When smoke is blown into the hive it dulls the guard bee’s senses. Some bees them gulde themselves on the honey making them lazy and slow.
Quotes from text:
“Prior to removable frames, beehives and bees alike had to be destroyed to harvest honey. Blowing sulfur smoke into the hive killed the bees, then the hive was taken apart and crushed to extract the honey.”
“Even ancient Egyptians used smoke to harvest honey, but they held a shell or piece of pottery filled with a mound of smoldering cow dung, blowing the plume into the hive. Thousands of years later, not much had changed.”
- The ancient Egyptians used it to harvest honey
- The smoke dulls the guard bees senses
- It makes the bees guldge themselves on honey
- Before removable frames they used fires
- Also used to destroy bees and beehives to harvest
- Quinby is the fathers of beekeeping in America

Reflection
Bees are important because 1/3 bites of food are directly or indirectly effected my bees.
Just imagine how important they are then. Bee population is disappear due to CCS or
pesticides. Based on how important they are, the fact they are disappearing is concerning.
I focused on making a bee smoker and figuring out how the smoke effects bee/works.
What the smoker does is make the guard bees hazy so they don't alert the soldier bees.
Eventually that other bees effected by the smoker start to gorge themselves on the honey.
The bee smoker I made came out better than I though for the lack of material I had. I could
have improved it by having more access to information or material.
